Product Description
New Product Dossier  ·  5.0-Inch Sunlight-Readable TFT LCD

1,900 nits of daylight readability, in a 5-inch industrial TFT LCD

The TXW500287B0 pairs an 800×480 WVGA panel with a 27-LED backlight rated from -30 °C to +85 °C — built to be read in the sun and trusted for years. By Shenzhen Tianxianwei Technology.

Few things are more frustrating than a screen you have to shade with your hand. In the field — on a bright loading dock, at a sunlit pump, in the cab of a machine — an ordinary display becomes a grey mirror the moment direct light hits it. The TXW500287B0 is engineered around that single, stubborn problem: 1,900 cd/m² of front luminance, an 800×480 WVGA canvas, a 24-bit RGB interface, and an operating range from -30 °C to +85 °C.

For products that live outdoors and in industry, it is the difference between information you can read at a glance and information you have to chase with your shadow.

Readable in daylight

Brightness is not a vanity number; under strong ambient light it is the only thing that preserves contrast. Ambient illumination adds a reflected term to both the bright and dark states of a display, and that term scales with surface reflectance and how much light strikes the screen. At 1,900 cd/m² — several times the luminance of a mainstream indoor panel — this module keeps a wide gap between white and black, so the interface stays readable rather than merely visible in sunlight.

A panel can have a healthy contrast ratio in a dark room and still be unreadable outdoors, because the metric that matters in the field is contrast under ambient light. The reflected term grows with illuminance; the only display-side lever is front luminance headroom. That is precisely what 1,900 nits buys: margin to spend against the sun.

Gauges, buttons, and text that hold their shape and contrast when the glare arrives.

An efficient, long-lived backlight

The edge-lit backlight uses 27 white LEDs with a forward voltage of only 8.4-9.6 V and a nominal current of 180 mA. That low-voltage string is straightforward to drive from a compact constant-current stage and simple to dim, and it reaches full luminance without aggressive current per LED. Rated life is 30,000 hours to half luminance at 20 mA per LED — and, as with all LEDs, pushing beyond 25 mA per LED shortens that figure.

Run the emitters comfortably rather than on the edge, and both brightness and lifetime benefit. Because luminous depreciation tracks junction temperature, good thermal relief around the LED edge extends that effect from the datasheet into the field.

A familiar interface, thoughtfully controlled

The module speaks the industry-standard 24-bit RGB bus (R7-R0, G7-G0, B7-B0) with a dedicated pixel clock (DCLK) and display timing signals — DE, HSYNC, and VSYNC — so it integrates cleanly with the graphics peripherals found on mainstream MCUs, SoCs, and FPGAs. A STBYB pin provides a standby mode: hold it high for normal operation, or pull it low to shut down the timing controller and source drivers for power savings. The panel renders 16.7 million colors, driven by the FL58202DA.

Route the RGB bus with matched trace lengths and a continuous ground return beneath it, keep the pixel clock away from switch-mode regulators and motor drives. A 24-bit bus is forgiving, but not infinitely so — skew between data and clock shows up as color noise long before total failure.

A small group of OTP pins is reserved for factory programming and left unconnected in the field — keeping host wiring simple.

A closer look at the display itself

This is an open-frame module: a TFT panel, driver, backlight, and flex, with no touch layer and no cover glass. The active area is 108.00 × 64.80 mm at a 0.135 mm pixel pitch, arranged in an RGB vertical stripe for natural text and crisp edges, and the module measures just 2.90 mm thick. The cell is a normally-black, transmissive TFT active-matrix design with an ALL O'CLOCK viewing designation.

The front-surface reflectance you choose — glass quality, coatings, and bonding — directly changes how the 1,900-nits backlight performs under glare. The brightest panel will still disappoint behind a reflective, unbonded window.

Built for the long haul

Qualification covers the conditions that actually break products: 96 hours each at high- and low-temperature storage and operation (+85 °C / -30 °C), a 60 °C/90%RH humidity soak, plus 10 thermal-shock cycles between -30 °C and +85 °C. Pass criteria reject missing or shorted segments, display anomalies, seal loosening, bubbles, and liquid-crystal leakage. Storage and operation both span -30 °C to +85 °C, with humidity up to 90% RH.

In the cold, liquid-crystal response slows; plan a warm-up delay or heater if you must switch quickly below freezing. In the heat, the backlight is usually the dominant source, so ventilation and LED thermal design do double duty.
